Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI v Chipperfield Clarendon 3rd XI on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won by 4 Wkts

Match report A must win game between two promotion chasing sides ended in a hard fought win for Sawbridgeworth III at a firstly humid & later breezy Leventhorpe.
Bowler won the toss and inserted the opposition on a pitch that was a little greener & more grassy than normal, after moderate over night rain.

The decision was a bold one after last week's poor chase at Langleybury, however,Burrell's early departure due to work commitments and a well balanced Sawbridgeworth attack coupled with overcast conditions and humidity turned out to be the correct one in the end.

Purnell once again spearheaded the attack, bowling with accuracy & pace taking advantage of a stiff inswinging breeze. He again made the early breakthrough picking up the wicket of the dangerous looking left handed CC opener for 7.

James Gostling, at the other end, struggled for control with the gusty wind, however, when he got it right, he was a menace, making full use of the wicket, with an excellent spell of medium pace bowling that included bounce, seam & swing. He comprehensively bowled CC No's 3 & 4,before Delaney & Burrell joined the party, with Delaney picking up two wickets & Burrell mopping up the tail. Gostling chipped in with 1 removing the obdurate No. 7.

A fine bowling & fielding performance then, easily our best of the season, although extras were the highest score at 30.

So, a target of 99 off 59 overs, left us full of confidence, although acutely aware that the wicket was not a typical Leventhorpe one.

Levey & Burrell opened up, with Levey getting off to a flyer guiding the rapid Gray for a succession of boundaries down to the third man area.Burrell fell cheaply, with one eye on Heathrow, but at 46 for 1 off 9 overs we were well positioned.English also went cheaply, but with Bowler pushing 1's & 2's, in a partnership with Levey, the score edged up to 65 off 15 overs.Bowler & Levey fell soon after tea to the alternately bouncy & skiddy Gray.

Fisher, gloved behind sweeping, leaving a nervy half an hour, with Inch boldly flashing his blade with support from Bird, who played a great supporting role holding his nerve to finish not out.

Inch departed with the score on 99, leaving Purnell to hit the winning runs with an emhatic four off Gray.

A good win, but it could easily have gone either way,but for another solid anchor innings from Levey, who was in his element in the conditions against a useful CC attack.

So, this week it was the bowler's turn to set up victory, that saw us leap frog CC up to second place with 30 points, as opposed to CC's 6.

All to play for next week,in a posible Championship decider with Totteridge Millhillians, although there is all to play for with 5 matches remaining as we enter August and the business end of the season.

Well done boys & roll on next week.
