Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Cup XI v Leverstock Green on Sun 30 May 2010 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 22 runs

Match report Sawbridgeworth were grateful to a superb all-round performance from Hasantha Fernando as they squeezed past plucky Leverstock Green in the Readers Herts County Cup on Sunday.

The Sri Lankan scored 66 off 75 balls and took 4-16 in nine overs to helped set up a second round tie against Shenley Village at Town Fields on 27 June.

After being inserted, the home side were immediately under pressure when skipper Wilson was caught behind off Sam Mazurek's second ball of the day.

When Rudkin fell in similar fashion in the sixth over to give Adam Thomas his first wicket, Sawbo were 9-2 but Joe Holland counter-attacked straight away, despatching his opening delivery for four. He struck a six and three further boundaries in his next seven balls but soon saw Sanders fall leg-before for 11.

Fernando got off the mark first ball with a streaky inside edge to the boundary but Holland continued to blaze away, reaching 39 off 24 balls but departed to his 25th when he gave Leverstock Green's Aussie 'keeper Alex King his third catch of the innings.

Sawbo were now 60-4 after 12.4 overs, and added only eight runs up until the 20 over mark. Considering their three best highest-scoring overs had gone for 36 runs, this demonstrated just how well the visitors had performed in the field.

Fernando had now been joined by Ashman, and their contrasting roles built the platform for the home side's revival. The pair's fifth wicket stand yielded 87 runs in 118 balls (Ashman's contribution being just 18) with the Sri Lankan hitting five boundaries and three towering sixes.

Mazurek broke the partnership in his last over, trapping Fernando lbw which sparked a dramatic collapse as Sawbo's last six wickets fell for 31 runs as they were dismissed with 22 balls of their 50 overs unused.

Jordan Parkes was the main beneficiary of the collapse, taking 4-10 in 20 deliveries but the figures of the Leverstock Green bowlers were a true reflection of their display.

Leverstock Green would have been looking a good start to their reply, but they didn't get it as both openers had gone after just 1.2 overs.

Fernando struck with his fourth delivery as King was bowled for a "golden" before David Coulshed was caught at slip by Wilson via a deflection off Joe Edwards' gloves.

And it would have been 1-3 had Alex Syed not dropped a sharp chance to dismiss Charlie Mahanama first ball. Although Brad Hughes played on to Fernando, it looked to be an expensive miss as Mahanama reeled off a flurry of boundaries.

Skipper Dayle Littlejohn was next to go, caught at mid-on by Birch off Ryan Cunningham before Fernando removed Mahanama (30 off 25 balls) to leave Leverstock in tatters at 44-5.

Nick Merrett was next to go, being adjudged lbw to Howard by Green's umpire Alun Roberts but he clearly played the ball into his pad.

Green's last hope rested with Dave Tyson, who had scored a 60-ball hundred against Hoddesdon eight days previously as his side successfully chased down 327 to win.

He continued that excellent form, hitting 11 off Cunningham and three fours off Howard. Fernando returned to remove Richard Walker to leave Green 78-7 after 17.2 overs but Tyson finally found an ally in Parkes. He scored exactly half their eighth wicket stand of 38 before the latter was bowled by the Jamaican.

With 20 overs left, the visitors required 62 runs with two wickets left. Tyson reached his fifty off 72 balls as the score crept up past 150. Wilson hit Mazurek's leg-stump and in his next over finally breached Tyson's defence as Sawbo claimed victory by 22 runs.

Tyson's 64 came off 81 balls, including 10 fours and a six, but was not enough to bring his side a shock win in a first round that saw last year's runners-up
Potters Bar and five-times winners Welwyn Garden City both exit the competition.
