Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 1st XI Sunday v Downham and Bellingham on Sun 04 Jul 2010 at 2:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 1 run

Match report The first-ever meeting between Sawbridgeworth and Downham and Bellingham provided a classic encounter, with the home side winning by one run off the final ball of the match.

The home side overcame the loss of Edwards to the fourth ball of the day as Ashman led the way with a superb innings of 91, hitting 14 fours and two sixes from 102 balls.

He shared partnerships of 81 and 99 with Charlie Rudkin(25)and Joe Rudkin (54 off 46 balls, 10 fours) as Sawbo reached 180-2 in the 29th over.

Joe's departure sparked a dramatic collapse as the last eight wickets fell for just 46 runs in 59 balls, with Syed (21) being the only other player to reach double figures.

Veteran left-arm spinner Chris Mendham was the main architect of the collapse, taking 5-36 with the other three wickets falling to Downham skipper David Powell. Sawbridgeworth were dismissed in just 38.2 overs, with 40 balls of their 45 over allocation unused.

In reply, Downham's opening pair of Sawyer and Bailey took full advantage of some poor Sawbo fielding as they put on 108 for the first wicket. Reynolds was finally rewarded for a fine spell as the latter was caught off a top edge by Joe Rudkin for a 63-ball fifty.

The Kent side reached 143-1 in the 28th over and looked on course for a comfortable win. However, Sawyer was caught at mid-off for a fine 74 (82 balls),Joe Rudkin dismissed Hopper and Crouch in successive overs before some smart work by Tony Marshall saw Stewart Barnes run out.

The visitors required 67 from 78 balls and Powell and Jeff Barnes had appeared to taken them to the brink of victory with a sixth wicket stand of 47.

When Powell edged behind, the equation was 19 needed from 26, but some brilliant bowling by Howard and Syed meant seven were needed off the last over.

Howard held his nerve and he conceded only four runs from the first five balls. With three needed off the final delivery, Gibbons could only squeeze out a single to leave Sawbo the winners of a magnificent game of cricket.

A notable member of the Downham team was former Charlton Athletic FC player-manager Steve Gritt, who bowled unchanged to take 1-40 in his opening spell of nine overs and also took a catch at mid-off to dismiss Syed.
