Harpenden v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Cup XI on Sun 25 Jul 2010 at
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost 3 wickets

Match report Sawbridgeworth's participation in this year's Readers Herts County Cup ended at Harpenden on Sunday despite a brilliant century by Hasantha Fernando.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder struck his maiden hundred for the club, scoring 140 from just 131 balls, hitting 14 fours and five sixes, four of which came off the bowling of former Hertford left-arm spinner Jon Ryan.

He featured in a second wicket stand of 208 with Danny Wilson (90) as the pair recorded the highest ever partnership for Sawbo in this competition.

Sawbo's total looked an imposing one but having reached 219-1 from 40 overs, they probably should have scored 300 but managed to scored only 65 from the last 60 balls of the innings.

Chris Arnold was the pick of the Harpenden attack by a distance, his figures of 3-41 being the outstanding return of the match.

Sawbo would have hoped for an early breakthrough but it didn't come as Cooper and Bennett-Baggs batted superbly as they made full use of the fielding restrictions during the first 15 overs.

They rattled along at seven an over and put on 151 before Cooper's 58 ball knock ended off the last ball of the 20th over when he fell to a smart catch by Chisnall.

Drinks were taken at the halfway stage with Harpenden requiring just another 110 but once again Sawbo benefitted from the break in play as Bennett-Baggs was bowled five balls after the resumption.

Rob Farenheim struck a quick 40 off 44 balls before holing out to long-on and before Fernando returned to dismiss Stewart and Pankhurst in successive deliveries. Harpenden were 223-5 after 36 overs, still requiring 52 off 84 balls.

Will Bates and Guy Watts added 30 for the sixth wicket before the former fell to a juggled catch at point. Chris Howard claimed a second wicket when Watts edged behind but by now, Harpenden needed just 17 runs from six overs.

The home side reached their target with 14 balls to spare but Sawbridgeworth were left to reflect on what at times was an indifferent bowling display. They conceded 41 extras, including 25 in wides which proved costly in the end.

Harpenden advance to a home semi-final on 15 August against Bishop's Stortford, who beat West Herts by seven wickets in the last eight.
