Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 7 wickets

Match report Sawbridgeworth moved up to sixth place in the HCPL Division Two East table after they recorded a comfortable seven wicket victory at Whitethorn Lane on Saturday.

They had lost all four previous meetings against Letchworth in the last two years but Joe Holland's side ended that unwanted sequence as they comprehensively outplayed their struggling hosts, who remain bottom of the table without a win all season.

Overnight rain delayed the start by 35 minutes which saw the match reduced to a minimum of 100 overs, with a maximum of 55 available to the team batting first which was Letchworth, who were inserted by Holland under cloudy skies.

He was given the perfect start by Burrell, who trapped Aitkenhead bang in front with the first ball of the innings as the Letchworth opener was sent on his way by umpire Barry Deadman.

His opening partner, Tom Simmons, should also have gone for a duck but a sharp return catch was spilled by James, whose miss was the only misdeamour in a superb spell which saw him fully exploit the conditions.

Bates was next to go, however, being run out in the sixth over following some brilliant work by Simon Ellis to leave Letchworth on 13-2 after 6.1 overs. Three runs were added in the next two overs before the home side went 38 balls without scoring a run, losing two further wickets in the process.

Simmons was comprehensively bowled by Burrell before James finally got some reward via a smart catch at second slip that sent Chatfield on his way. He struck again in his ninth over when a smart catch by Edwards saw Chahal go for seven and half the Letchworth side were back in the hutch with just 29 on the board.

Smith and Albon (skippering Letchworth in the absence of the injured Steve March) showed some resistance as they added 48 for the sixth wicket either side of lunch. The stand was finally broken when Albon was caught at silly point by Wilson off Morgan, who also struck in his next over when he bowled Booth for a duck.

Dominic Simmonds was run out going for a suicidal second and Morgan claimed his third wicket when Smith's 85-ball vigil was finally ended with the first ball of the off-spinner's 11th over.

Letchworth were 92-9 and in danger of missing out on a batting point with batting conditions having greatly improved, this saw Morse and Newland put on 24 for the last wicket. Joe Rudkin replaced Burrell at the scorebox end and needed only eight deliveries to wrap up the innings when a top edge by Newland saw Edwards run back 20 yards before clinging on to a diving catch.

The visitors had been dismissed in 52.2 overs which meant Sawbo had a minimum of 47 to reach their target, which they achieved with 71 balls to spare.

Wilson, who was making his 150th league appearance for Sawbo, helped the visitors make the perfect start as he helped put on 61 for the first wicket with Charlie Rudkin, who fell in the penultimate over before tea. He had struck Bates' first delivery over mid-on for four but attempted the same shot two balls later with Morse taking a comfortable catch.

Chellew was run out to the sixth ball of the evening session and Wilson fell six short of his 50 when he was caught at mid-wicket of Dominic Simmonds' first delivery but Ellis and Joe Rudkin saw the visitors home.

Ellis finished unbeaten on 17 while Rudkin rounded off the proceedings in spectacular fashion with a magnificent straight six off Morse to 25 not out from just 23 deliveries.

The league season reaches the halfway point on Saturday when Sawbo play host to Hertford, who are 18 points ahead in fifth place.
