Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 1st XI v Hertford on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 11:30
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report A devastating five-wicket burst by Chris Chellew and a mature half-century by Joe Rudkin were among the highlights of Sawbridgeworth's four wicket victory over Hertford on Saturday.

Joe Holland's remain sixth in the table, just one point behind Hertford, but ar third win in four matches demonstrates the positive direction the team is going as they enter the second half of the season.

After winning the toss, the hosts needed just eight balls to make the breakthrough as Will Bancroft was bowled by James for a second ball duck.

Will Ray and Jamie Riddle made decent progress as they added 34 for the second wicket before Chellew produced a devastating spell as Hertford dramatically collapsed in 28 crazy minutes from 36-1 to 46-5.

Ray was adjudged leg-before before Cliff Cavener played on to be dismissed first ball. Riddle went the same way as Ray after 38 painstaking deliveries before Anderson was beaten for pace as his off-bail fell to the ground.

Amid all the carnage, James continued to bowl brilliantly at the other end as he put together four maidens in a row in another highly economical spell. His figures of 13-7-18-1 spoke for themselves, but remarkably conceded only seven scoring shots (three fours, two singles and two twos) from the 78 deliveries that he bowled.

In the circumstances, Hertford did well to only lose one more wicket before lunch, which they reached at 85-6 from 33 overs with Chellew finishing his initial spell with figures of 8-0-20-5.

Ollie Ray and Pavey added 34 runs either side of lunch but when boht played fell to Morgan in successive overs, the visitors were struggling on 103-8 with a third of their 60-over allocation remaining.

Scott Ruskin, who was batting at nine due to a hand injury, led the counter-attack as he scored a run-a-ball 53 that included five fours in the space of 10 deliveries.

He found a useful ally in Mead as the pair added 66 to record a new HCPL ninth wicket record for Hertford that was only ended when Ruskin fell courtesy of a three man run out.

Andy Brazill only lasted five balls which meant Sawbo had a minimum of 55 overs to chase down their target.

Wilson passed 500 league runs for the season but failed to reach double figures for only the second time this term before Chellew threatened to take the game away from the visitors. He reeled off five boundaries in quick succession as he
reached 25 off just 22 balls before attempting one big shot too many as he was snapped up by Ruskin at mid-off.

Two balls later, 41-2 became 42-3 as Charlie Rudkin was caught at 2nd slip via a deflection off the 'keeper and Sawbridgeworth's task was looking a more difficult proposition despite a run-rate of over four runs per over.

Ellis and Joe Rudkin steadied the ship as they added 36 runs before the latter fell in the penultimate over before tea which Sawbo reached at 79-4 after 26 overs.

The game was in the balance but the fact the home side won with seven overs to spare was down to a superb innings by Rudkin, who produced arguably his most mature league knock for Sawbridgeworth.

His shot selection was top drawer and a 101-ball fifty was just what his side needed in partnership with his captain as they scored 61 runs from the first 14 overs of the evening session.

After a slow start, the runs began to flow as 10 fours and a six were scored in an eight-over period before Rudkin was caught at mid-wicket three balls after
reaching his 50.

Holland finally looked to have rediscovered his form before being caught on the boundary with 16 needed. Burrell struck an unbeaten 25 from 21 balls to take his batting average past 50 for the season but it was Morgan who finished off the proceedings with the winning boundary.

On Saturday, Sawbridgeworth will be looking to complete a league "double" over Knebworth Park whom they beat by 161 runs on the season's opening day.
