Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 32 runs

Match report A big turn around for us after the first couple of weeks and a really important win.

It was a game that ebbed and flowed from the start. The pitch looked like it was going to be a road and therefore it was no surprise when they won the toss and elected to bowl. But it soon became clear it wasn't such a good batting track as there was tennis ball bounce while also some variable bounce and turn.

Despite the early loss of Brends we started well against what we hope will be the best new ball opening pair we will see this season. Their overseas was particularly sharp and used the bounce effectively. But Runcie and Simon saw them off while still managing to go at 3 an over. But the change in bowling made the difference for them as we lost Runcie, Simon, Chis and Al in the space of 10 overs. We were then in trouble at 85 for 5 off 30, but we had the experience of Birchy and Bugsy at the crease and they batted beautifully. They put on 54 priceless runs, but the real turning point was when they took their spinner off who had 2 for 7 off 10. Instead they brought the openers back on and the run rate started to climb as boundaries were scored, or given to us through extras. In the end we got to 180, which we did really well to get with Birchy topscoring on 45.

We opened up with the old ball and it immediately payed dividends as Dave and Billy both took a wicket in their second overs. After 8 over they were 4 for 2 and we were well on top. Wickets continued to fall as the squeeze came on and at 43 for 5 it looked like we had the game in our hands to win. But their overseas was in and started to look to hit out, taking a particular shine to Dave as he hit 3 sixes off him. But when on 32 he absolutely smashed one at Simon at mid wicket who took a great catch leaving them 67 for 6. But if we thought it was over we were wrong again as their number 7 took up the mantle and started to accelerate. With 8 overs left they needed 50, the seamers were now on though and we finally made the breakthrough. The key was when the 7 was bowled for 56 and we quickly got out 10 and 11 to win by 32 runs, but it felt closer than that and to their credit they went for it all the way.
