St Albans 2nd XI v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 27 Aug 2011 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
A match played at the St Albans 2nd ground, Verulam Sportsfield was host to the Sawbridgeworth juggernaut. Bovaird won the toss and did not hesitate to insert the oppositon on another sticky, green seamer.
The luckless Marriott who had put the ball on a length all season for no reward was soon among the wickets, sending the St Albans top 4 back with the score on 34. The St Albans batsmen were no match for his mixture of canny in-swing and seam movement and another day would see a better return than his 5 wicket haul. The dependable Billings bamboozled the batsmen with his fight and guile and he too added 5 wickets to his seasons collection.
Runciman, struggling to cope with the previous nights excesses began the Sawbo chase slowly after Jackson fell early to a top edged pull. Fortified by a bacon and sausage sandwich at tea and the increasing threat of rain, he soon found his touch from the previous week. His partnership with the impish Ellis carved the St Albans attack to all parts of the ground to finish the match just as the heavens opened.
So up to the dizzy heights of eighth in the league with one to play against Botany Bay who need a win to be sure of winning the Div 4 title. The threat of 2 heavy weights slugging it out for a win on the last day of the season should whet the appetite of followers down at Town Fields this Saturday and offer a fitting finale to the season...
