North Enfield 2nd XI v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1:00

Match report On a humid day at North Enfield, their captain won the toss and surprisingly decided to bat first on a pitch that was slightly damp.

We made the most of the conditions early on with James Wair and James Gostling bowling well, at one stage we had North Enfield 16 for 4, however, conditions started to dry out and batting became easier as the day progressed.

North Enfield's number 7 hit a superb 83 not out which swung the game in their favour and concluded their innings on 212 for 9.

Our innings started well with both Bren and Kev getting themselves a start and looking comfortable against the opening attack , disaster struck when Bren wanted a quick single, however, both batsmen ended up at the same end.

Kev was then accompanied at the crease by Alex Syed who looked good for his 19 before being slightly unlucky to be bowled.

Ian joined Kev and the two of them went about first steadying the ship and then pushing on after their total. Ian hit some sweet straight drives for four and Kev started opening his shoulders to good effect. With a partnership totalling 80, Kev was bowled for a well constructed 74. Next in was Tom Waring with considerable pressure on his shoulders. He was more than capable of the task in hand, scoring a magnificent 26 very quickly. Ian eventually fell for a fantastic 48 whilst trying to push on the score. The final over approached, with Sawbridgeworth needing 11 to win. In this over, James Wair was run out for 4 whilst attempting a quick single, which brought Charlie on to strike and Nick Dale to the crease. From three balls, we needed 8. Charlie hit this ball for 4, then straight drove the next ball to boundary, which was well fielded and only one run was scored. We needed 3 to win, 2 to tie from the last ball. Nick leg glanced the ball and both batsmen set off with at least 2 runs in mind, only for Nick to be millimetres short of the second run, which would have tied the scores.

This was a magnificent game, played in good spirit on a lovely ground. Games of cricket don't get much better than this.
