Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI v County Hall 2nd XI on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1:00

Match report On a warm day at Leventhorpe, where the usual breeze was actually a relief there was a very important toss to win.... and I lost. I knew as soon as I saw that head face up that we was fielding and the hard work was about to get underway.

The County Hall openers put on over 50 for the first wicket, seeing off James Wairs opening spell and a few overs from Hibbsy. The pair were going well, approaching 100 when they decided to block the ball straight back to mini-billy who made no mistake and brought a cheer from the very unbiased umpire Penn. Langon came and went quickly as he was trapped in front to Gossy's slower, "wobble" ball. It was hard work in the field and we stuck at it well without Kev Youngs for the first 2 hours of our innings. Gossy and Billings began to turn the screw and bring the run-rate down to just over 3. Hibbs came back into the attack and picked up Manford who threatened to take the game away from us. Balisin played well before decided to take 2 to Harnack at log off and didn't make it back. James Wair came back into the attack to pick up both Stevenson and Melissi for ducks. Despite, our good work in the field we didn't bowl as well as we should have from the other end to support Gossy who's figures of 21-5-65-2 were what you would expect of the veteran but the oppo still manage to post a competitive 250.

In reply, Ted opened up with Gossy as he had to go at half 6 so he decided to get on with it, smashig 54 before being out with 6.30 fast approaching. Before that though, Gos batted with 5 different partners as Ted, Bowls, Burs and Rich could only muster 29 runs between them and Kev only managed to another 8 to that. Kev's dismissal brought Joe Rickett to the crease at number 8 as he had a bad back and with the pressure all off he batted beautifully from the start, making sure that both myself and him kept the bored ticking over. Ted said before the start that the only people that would get us out was ourselves and that couldn't be truer with me as I played a really average shot that I definitely won't be playing again. Joe kept going with James Wair who smashed a quickfire 11 including a 6 over cow and then Hibbsy came to the crease. He scored 2 before smashing the first ball of the last over to mid-wicket. The team blocker Matt Billings came to the wicket who blocked balls 2 and 3 before running a bye on 4 to give Joe the strike. Joe calmly blocked out the last 2 balls to give us a draw and 14 points that leaves us 8th in the table.

Gossy was undoubtedly the man of the match for his batting and bowling and I will be glad when he's back from sunning himself in Spain. The young boys Matt Billings and Joe Rickett continue to impress in the side with Matt bowling exceptionally and Joe producing the kind of performance that I know he can put in and I would love to see that display a bit further up the order in the future.

Another decent result lads but definite areas to improve too. We have a lot of games coming up against teams around us at the moment so we have to keep picking up points and getting good results to stay up the top and give ourselves a chance.
