Harpenden 4th XI v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won By 64 runs

Match report So this week we travelled to Harpenden who started the day just 1 place above us and we knew a win would allow us to overtake them. With great relief I won the toss and elected to bat first which was a popular decision with the team given the heat. Cass and Springer opened up and comfortably got us through the first 10 overs before fallig in quick succession. Charlie Mann and Alex Syed came to the crease and got us to drinks at 40 odd off 17 overs. After drinks was a pivotal moment in the game though as after a cautious start Charlie exploded hitting boundaries, mainly through the leg side, for fun. He lost Alex Syed along the way but was supported by the ever reliable Burson who just played sensibly giving the strike to Charlie who had the momentum. After bring up his 50 in just 38 balls with just 19 scoring shots he calmed down a little and we just knocked it around in the middle overs. Burson went about building an innings and made 35 before he was caught behind. Charlie brought up a superb century with a sweep out to deep square that marked a standing ovation from his team making him the 2nd player in two weeks to score a century batting at 3 following Bowls from last week (a stat I'd like to keep going). Rich who came to the crease at Burs's departure played nicely with shots all around the wicket as Charlie kept going. Waltham Abbey's new number 1 was eventually out for 117 and by that time we already had a lot of runs on the board. However, rather than declare I decided to have a hit myself as me and Rich put on 49 in the last 6 overs to get us up to 260-5, our biggest score of the season and an intimidating score.

So it came to our turn to field and after starting with the old ball I struck immediately trapping Petrice LBW in the very first over. This brought their number 3 to the crease and we were less than polite to him after over-hearing him say that he "takes 5-fors and scores 100s for fun in this league", I'd like to add that he didn't get a wicket in the first innings. After realising he only really had one shot, the bottom hand moo to wide mid-on me and Billy went about our plans and I was unlucky not to have him after Mann dropped him twice at short mid-wicket. It didn't take us long to get the second wicket their number 2 walked across and got pinned o the crease to a straight one from me again. Then there was a period where we went off the game and forgot how to bowl but on the stroke of drinks we finally got the arrogant Smith who played onto Owen for 35. Syed replaced Billings and despite a few loose overs first up settled into a lovely rhythm in what was a good spell. Wair was bowling from the other end and it wasn't long before he had his reward tempting Bilal into a drive straight to bucket-hands Edwards at cover. Syed then joined the party as he was back up by the Harnack family. First Rich swallowed a skier a skyer at mid-on before Henry Harnack, keeping Burs and Mann away from the gloves took a great catch with his weight going in the opposite direction. Next there was a controversial run out in our favour when Louis Gabaldoni, a young kid that I actually coach hit the ball to point and called 1. However, Guest was quick to react, field and throw the ball in for Harnack to take the bails off and of course we appealled and the umpire stuck his finger up uttering the words "i'm not sure" at the same time as Burson was in his way..... BONUS! Now it says Lewis was out bowled Billings but I think this has to go down as being talked out by the team as we goaded him into a big leg side biff and he was done all ends up by Billy who claimed his second wicket. With time running out we needed just 3 wickets and it was looking unlikely until the man of the day Mann pulled off a stunning one hand diving react catch at silly mid-off to end the resistance of Galbaldoni to leave us needed one wicket to win. Time passed and the overs ticked away and the last 2 were doing everything they could to avoid defeat, Billings, Syed, Reynolds, Guest, Mann and Spring were all used in the last 10 overs in the hope of a a breakthrough but without success and the only chanec going between slip and the keeper for 4. So i took the responsibility of the last over and started with the ball sailing to the boundary to four byes down the leg side. Then next ball hit the pad but was going down and then with the 3rd ball of the over I got the yorker in and Mackey played all around it to spark massive celebrations as the slip corden charged towards me. That's why we play cricket for drama like that.

It wasn't the perfect performance with the ball by any stretch of the imagination but we got the 30 points we came for and that's all that matters. Well done boys, lets go again next week.
