Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 42 runs

Match report After three successive first round exits, Sawbridgeworth finally recorded their first ever win in the Conference Cup by defeating Harrow by 42 runs at a very cold Town Fields on Sunday.
On a day when the temperature struggled to reach double figures, it was no surprise when Harrow skipper Waqas Hussain elected to field on winning the toss, in the hope his bowlers would be able to take advantage of some ideal bowling conditions.
He did not get his wish, as Vosloo’s opening delivery went for two wides and he conceded eight no-balls in his opening burst of six overs. Wilson took full advantage of the situation as he quickly reeled off four boundaries as the opening stand reached 40 at the end of the ninth over, when Rudkin was run out at the bowler’s end via a direct hit from Khan.
The introduction of medium-pacer Morris and the spin of Paditowala saw the run-rate come down significantly and it was another 18 overs before Sawbo reached 100, which coincided with Wilson reaching his 50 off 84 balls with his sixth boundary.
Both the home side’s second and third wickets added 27 runs with Joe Rudkin falling to a low catch at mid-wicket off the bowling of Morris, who also accounted for Yadav, who edged behind having struck a couple of stylish boundaries.
Ashman joined Wilson and the pair took the score to 153 after both players had enjoyed lucky escapes. The former was dropped on just five at cover by the usually reliable Paditowala, while Wilson survived on 61 when Clarke spilled a difficult return catch.
Paditowala redeemed himself as he returned to dismiss both players in successive overs, but Ashman’s drop was to prove crucial as he produced another impressive knock. With seven overs left, Burrell joined Holland with seven overs left, and the pair scored 59 runs with a series of great strokeplay from the sublime to the outrageous.
Holland’s six over fine leg stuck in the memory as did Burrell’s stunning maximum through the covers off the final ball of the innings.
Faced with a run-rate of exactly five runs an over, Harrow openers made a similar start to their hosts with Hussain and Khan putting on 37 in the first 10 overs.
Yadav, who was playing against his former club, made a double breakthrough in his second over. He trapped Hussain in front before a low slip catch accounted for Morris for a fourth ball duck. At the other end, Paul “Two Darts” James bowled as magnificently as his figures suggested. He exploited the conditions perfectly, conceding only a wide in his last four overs and deservedly got a wicket when Clarke’s frustration finally got the better of him as he holed out to a magnificent tumbling catch by Ashman at long-on.
The visitors’ reply was held together by Khan, who was dropped on six and 28, but nobody else provided a significant contribution with Choudhry being the only other player to reach double figures before he was bowled by Waring, who performed very creditably on his cup debut.
Chris Howard returned to take two wickets in two balls, but hopes of a birthday hat-trick were a dashed when a very loud lbw appeal was turned down by Roger Abraham. Harrow scored 30 runs off the next two overs to give themselves a glimmer of hope before Yadav holed out to Burrell at mid-off before the Sawbo skipper rounded off a fine all-round performance by taking the final two wickets.
The only blot on the Sawbo performance were five dropped catches but this was another impressive performance and they will travel to Radlett for their opening league game full of confidence with three fine wins under their belt.
