Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 2nd XI v Berkhamsted on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report For the second week running, the watery summer was kind to the Sawbridgeworth 2nd XI. Runciman, again lucky with the toss elected to field first on a dry wicket with cloudy conditions and rain forecast.

Sure enough, the umpires took the players from the field after 6 overs with Berkhampstead 0-21. On the resumption, Sawbridgeworth took the field less Ashman who failed to inform the Skipper of his urgent evacuation needs. Sawbridgeworth were soon in the wickets through the dependable James with an LBW and then a clean bowled to have them 2-30. James, with metronomic accuracy continued to bamboozle the Berkhampstead batting who had no answer to his late swing, straight line and occasional seam. On a hat-trick twice, his final figures of 8-39 from 17 overs were the determining factor of a paltry score, surely too small to challenge a much vaunted batting line up at Town Fields.

A Sawbridgeworth run chase is always fraught with nerves & excitement. Today was no different. The resumption saw the promise of the sun breaking through the clouds but it was Rudkin who missed a straight one to give Berko the start that they needed. He was soon followed by Waring then Chisnall, both clean bowled, and Runciman caught at backward point leaving local hearts aflutter at 4-13. The diminutive Ellis began the reconstruction with a solid looking Ashman, refreshed after his stay on the porcelain earlier. After a promising start Ellis departed to a ball that bounced feathering to the ‘keeper. 5-43.
The Berko fielders sensed an unlikely victory and were desperate to breach the defence of Foster and Ashman. These two patiently waited for the bad deliveries while rotating the strike with 1's & 2's to hold their nerve seeing Sawbridgeworth home in an unbroken partnership of 79 with 16 overs to spare. The 2kg lighter Ashman finished the game quickly with a flurry of boundaries finishing with a classy 63.

Sawbridgeworth retain 4th spot in the league with a sniff of winning the League with 1st only 20 points away. But that’s a long way off, particularly with players unavailable next week. With a flat wicket at Hertford predicted, winning will be difficult but not beyond our reach.
