Hertford 2nd XI v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 29 Jun 2013 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report With previous weeks' rain banished, Sawbridgeworth turned up to a balmy Hertford fielding a weakened side due to unavailability in both 1st and 2nd teams. On losing the toss Sawbridgeworth batted first on a wicket that had seen over 800 runs scored in the week during a county match.

Almost immediately, Rudkin ran himself out before Purnell and an ominous looking Jackson consolidated. Both fell within 9 runs of each other and it was Chisnall & Waring who watchfully put together a 54 run partnership to continue the innings. Just as the British & Irish Lions have discovered in Australia, the 50/50 decisions tend to go the home side's way with a local official and we were about to feel the same pain. Chisnall,in the middle of destroying both Hertford spinners was adjudged have been stumped for a well made 51 before Foster departed to a confused LBW decision without offering a stroke. The fall of Waring at 108 became 157 all out as the Sawbridgeworth batsmen had no answer to the control and guile of the Hertford spinners to lose 6 wickets for 49 runs.

It initially appeared that tea catering was also a bit confused. On the one hand, standard childrens party fodder of chicken nuggets, potato wedges, cupcakes with coconut icing while on the other tuna/sweetcorn sandwiches, malt loaf and scones with jam & clotted cream. We took the field in the hope of snaffling a couple of early wickets to put pressure the local batsmen and force a strangled run chase but it was not to be.

Opening with the old ball, Burrell and Foster tried manfully but a missed stumping and some lusty hitting from the back foot by Hertford opener Joyce ensured a solid start. The only successful bowler of the day was Burrell and none of the bowlers could quite threaten enough with such a low total to defend and of the 3 chances offered, 2 were grassed. It goes without saying that any chance that goes begging defending a small total hurts the cause & these 2 were indeed costly.

While we hold onto 4th spot by the skin of our teeth, next weeks showdown with Cheshunt (3rd) will go a long way to determining our season. A number of players are welcomed back into the fold and this match (as well as the mid innings sustenance) should be a cracker at Town Fields if the weather holds.
