Bishop's Stortford v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 10 Aug 2013 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won by a rather close 1 wicket
Match report
The much awaited local derby in the Herts Division 4 league was worth the wait as we took on Stortford at Cricketfield Lane where a beer festival was also staged by the Hockey club. To the smell of barbequing bangers and burgers and the sound of the bucking bronco Sawbridgeworth won the toss, elected to field first and soon had 2 early wickets through Bovaird. The control of the omnipresent James, again bowling 26 overs unchanged ensured that the Stortford batsmen were unable to completely break the shackles on a good pitch. Their total of 192 from the allocated 53 overs owed as much to the lucky Smith as well as the Sawbo old boys Lloyd, O'Donovan) and Reed who all contributed useful runs.
An opening stand of 49 between Rudkin (29) and Ashman ensured a good foundation but it was a 101 partnership between Ashman and Chisnall (56) that appeared to break Stortford hearts. When Chisnall fell with the score at 3-160, Sawbridgeworth looked forward to another easy victory. However the usual chasing collapse gripped the growing home support as Stortford applied a squeeze of their own. The late introduction of Premadasa whose canny in-swing and tight lines masterminded an almost calamitous collapse of 6 wickets for only 27 runs.
With 6 runs required, last man Reynolds joined Ashman, the rock on which the innings was based. Ashman's careful shepherding of the strike was rewarded when he clipped the winning boundary to leg thus carrying his bat in a masterful display of endurance and patience. He scored just under half of his teams total and all but sealed Sawbridgeworth's promotion as well as their growing title aspirations. With only 5 points from the top in 3rd place, another win at Town Fields against Northampton Exiles will keep the heat on Bushey and Old Elizabethans who must be growing nervous of this winning streak from the boys of east Hertfordshire.
