Broxbourne 3rd XI v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 03 May 2014 at 1.00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost By 5 wickets

Match report The III's opened their account this season with a 5 wicket loss at Broxbourne. We were inserted on a good flat but slow wicket, due to heavy rain during the week. Levey and Heath got off to a solid start, but we were not able to build on this foundation as wickets constantly fell with no lasting partnerships being established, as the Broxbourne bowlers mounted pressure by keeping it simple bowling line and length. Heath looked in good 'nick' but fell to a pulled full toss that really should have been despatched into the canal on the leg side, just as he looked like he was going to open his shoulders and kick on to get a big one. Bowler steadied the ship after a couple of quick wickets with a scratchy start, but couldn't find a partner to build a meaningful partnership with. Wickets fell at regular intervals, as we edged our way towards some batting points. Sam Timms batted well at the end with some lofty blows finishing with a large 'caught' six, as he develops into a useful all rounder. 156 never really looked enough, on a very small ground against a team, though not the most technically gifted in the batting department (small boundary and plenty of bottom hand) but should make a top half finish in the League.

In reply Broxbourne made a good start against the old ball attack of Billings and Burrell. Matt Billings bowled with confidence, giving the ball plenty of flight. Once Burrell shook off some early season rust, he bowled with good control, varying the flight and pace of the ball finishing with a respectable 'fourfer'.He could possibly have gone on to win the game for us had we held on to our catches-some straightforward, others not.

So 9 points taken, on a week of poor availability is not the end of the world. Finishing on a positive note, there were good individual performances from old and young, including The Last of The Summer Wine trio of Levey, Heath and Burrell and youngsters Timms and Ramsey who batted and fielded with confidence. Clayden's bowling looked promising also taking a good catch, and he and Gale will be given more opportunities when circumstances and match situations dictate. Henry Harnack had a solid performance behind the stumps.

Hertford IV's next week-another testing fixture against a strong club with a large catchment area for players.
