Bovingdon v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 28 Jun 2014 at 1.00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost 1 wkt

Match report Another agonisingly close encounter where the fickle finger of fate conspired against us for the second week running-the result of the match hinging on the last ball of the game. This week, however, we almost turned defeat into an improbable victory after outstanding individual performances from the returning (well almost-he was doing us a favour) retiree Matt Birch and our very own spin wizard Romesh 'Murali' Paktsun.
Slow moving light rain at the start meant a reduced game of 90 overs. We were inserted (again) after losing the toss.
'Tourettes' Ted departed early after 5 overs, leaving Eric very frustrated not being able to send him packing for the fourth week running LBW.
Rickett fell to a sharp catch in the slips, also followed by Heath who fell to a bizarre unsighted (out of the trees) full toss which demolished his stumps.
At 29-4 Bowler was left to consolidate again on a wicket which at that point was dry, true and green. Phil Hyam, however, went second ball, leaving only one batter left in the hutch.
Enter Matt Birch, strutting into the Amphitheatre like Maximus Decimus Meridius. Blocking the good ball and smashing the bad, Birch (76 NO)pushed on while Bowler (35)dropped anchor. They put on 104 for the 4th wicket in 27 overs, leaving Bovaird (15 NO)and Birch to finish the innings off with a highly respectable 170 off 48 overs. Persistent light rain 'juiced up' the green wicket making batting and (bespectacled) visibility difficult, compounded by a slow wet outfield.
The momentum was definitely with us, but despite some good opening bowling from the youthful opening attack of Timms and Clayden, a drying wicket and outfield combined with some aggressive batting from the Bovingdon opener meant they got off to a flying start as he shuffled across his stumps and looked to pump everything to leg.
However at 107-3 and then 128-4, we always felt that we were in the game. Taking pace off the ball, 3rd team debutant Paktsun and Birch were introduced, with Romesh proving the pick of the bowlers with a fantastic five-fer. With two sharp run outs and panic setting in, Bovingdon scrambled to a last ball victory, converting **** all points into 30, and leaving us with a creditable 15. After the last two games we could be sitting in the Top 4, however, we've now slipped down to 8th, with a difficult fixture at home to second placed Langleybury next week. Well it's certainly not been boring, and we are not being rolled over, however, with a little bit of luck a return to winning ways would be much appreciated next week!
