Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI v Bushey 2nd XI on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 1.00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost by 75 runs

Match report A typical blustery and breezy Leventhorpe saw the wind turbine rotating at a fair lick, hosted second placed Bushey on a dry and intermittently sunny mid August afternoon.

Bushey won the toss and elected to bat on a flat looking dry wicket with fast outfield. The Bushey openers put on 107 for the first wicket in 26 overs as we tried to keep the run rate down and nab the first wicket.

The breakthrough came from Burrell removing the Bushey Captain, and No 3 in quick succession, to give us hope of getting into the Bushey middle order. The other Bushey opener, Manzoor, whose was well 'in' at this stage, after surviving an excellent opening spell from Timms, went on to make a very good 71, before edging behind to Harnack H, who had a very tidy game behind the stumps, with good glove work resulting in two catches and a stumping.

Burrell, who came out of retirement, finished with creditable figures of 3 for 56 off 19 overs, showing that class is permanent even at a ripe old age!

So we were set a rather daunting total of 223 off 48 overs, with Bushey declaring with one over to go, which seemed a little conservative at the time. We did however keep positive, plugging away with few (if any) chances being offered.

With only four recognised batters, we shuffled the pack opening with Bovaird and Heath. With Heath falling unluckily first ball, playing on off his pads, the omens weren't exactly looking promising!

Bovaird cut and drove his way to 16, and with Reynolds going cheaply, Bowler was left to consolidate with the game plan centring on point accumulation rather than chasing down an unrealistic total bearing in mind the balance of the team, and threadbare batting line up.

Bowler and Burrell put on 40 runs, with Burrell pulling his way to 31. A quick flurry of wickets, however, left Harnack T and Black to fight an entertaining rear guard action to frustrate the Bushey bowlers with a 20 run seven over partnership. The Bushey breakthrough finally came though with the first ball of the last over, which left us with a rather paltry 7 points.

On the basis that at one point during the week we had seven men, the positives to be had (despite a heavy loss) were the individual performances of Henry Harnack with smart glove work, the consistent bowling of Timms, a good opening spell from Black, and the bowling master class of Burrell all worth mentioning, with solid batting from Bowler, and stroke play from Burrell, Tom Harnack and Black.

A top half finish isn't guaranteed by any stretch, as we slip down to 11th place-the first time we have been in the bottom half all season, and with availability again looking poor, we will need to stick together and grind out some points next week against Northwood Town.

A final mention and thank you to Richard Black for surviving the elements, fighting off chilblains with a very professional looking scorebook.
