Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 1st XI v Welwyn Garden City on Sat 23 May 2015 at 11.30
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 1 wicket

Match report Sawbridgeworth's sensational start to the Herts League season continued as they pulled arguably their greatest ever league victory at Town Fields on Saturday.

After chasing down 280 at Hertford last week, Danny Wilson's men were set an even stiffer task this week as Welwyn recovered from 134-6 to 288-9 with former Middlesex & England player (& current Hampshire T20 star) Owais Shah scoring an magnificent unbeaten 127, adding 153 for the 7th wicket with Simon Greenall, who scored 51 against his former club.

The home side's reply began disastrously, as their prolific top three were all back in the hutch after five overs with 33 on the board. Despite Jerome (39) and Jala (31) staging a partial recovery in taking the score to 80, three wickets in nine overs meant Sawbo were struggling on 116-6 at the halfway stage.

Their prospects of a third win in a row looked bleak but after a slow start, Axon and Waring began to counter-attack as the boundaries began to flow. They scored just one boundary between overs 25 and 35, before the five over batting powerplay yielded 45 runs which took the hosts to 196-6, needing 93 from the last 10 overs.

The pair broke Sawbridgeworth's previous league seventh wicket partnership record of 119 set by Paul Monger and Doug Foster, coincidentally also against Welwyn Garden City in August 1991.

They scored 58 from the next five overs as Axon brought up his maiden century for Sawbridgeworth from just 78 deliveries, which was even more remarkable considering he scored 102 runs in the whole of last season!

The stand finally ended on 139 when Axon fell to a brilliant return catch by Walter, who then conceded a wide and two fours struck by the new batsman George Kenny.

With two overs left, Sawbo needed 13 to win but Hewitt struck twice in five deliveries before McGarry struck a boundary to need four needed off the last over.

A remarkable win was sealed as Alex Chalker bowled a wide down the leg side to Sean Black and the batsmen ran three to secure a remarkable one wicket win which Sawbridgeworth set a new record for the highest ever league run chase at Town Fields by any team and surpassed their previous best score to win batting second which they set at Hertford just seven days previously.
