Match report In a game where it looked as if Sawbridgeworth were dead and buried, a masterclass in resilience and resolve saw the 2nd XI grind out a well deserved draw against Wheathampstead

After losing the toss, Sawbridgeworth were put into the field and on a flat pitch, under clear skies, the visitors would certainly have been eyeing up a score of at least 250. However, Sawbridgeworth's bowlers had other ideas and in the batting friendly conditions, we restricted Wheathampstead to a very modest 222-8 from their 53 overs. Paul James and Joel Kirby bowled superbly, and when Joel sent their opener packing with the first delivery of the innings, the visitors were clearly rocked. Tight bowling from both ends built great pressure and by 30 overs we had them 91 - 6. We continued to bowl well and had it not been for a solid century from their number 3, probably would have kept them to under 150. Jamo, Joel and Fozzie were the pick of the bowlers, all bowling very economically.

With a team made up predominantly of bowlers, it would take a great team effort to chase down the required runs and after the first 10 overs we were in a solid position at 36-1. Unfortunately, a mistimed leg-side flick from Henry saw him caught off a leading edge and this sparked an infamous Sawbo collapse. After 19 overs we were 67-8 and looking straight down the barrel of another defeat. Enter, Dale and James. Between the two of them they put on 69 and crucially, ate up 21 overs. It was an incredible display of grit and determination with both players refusing to get out. Eventually, just 3 runs short of his 50 (jug avoidance?),Dale fell after playing a loose drive which was caught at cover. This brought the injured Syed to the crease to try and see out the remaining 6 overs with James. James continued to keep out Wheathampstead's bowlers and despite Syed trying his hardest to lose the game by edging one - only to be dropped by the keeper - the pair hung on to secure the most unlikely of draws.

At a time in the season where all of Sawbridgeworth's teams are struggling, this performance goes to prove what can be done if you dig in and show some application. Great efforts from all the lads involved, let's hope this sparks a run of victories!
