Bayford and Hertford v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 1:00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost by 54 runs

Match report After last weeks fighting draw, hopes were high for an improved performance but after losing the toss on a flat looking surface on a hot, sunny day things did not start according to plan. Dale's improved bowling performance was typified by seaming the ball in against the slope while the every reliable Joel Kirby kept the score in check in the early overs. However the heat soon sapped the energy of the bowlers and some loose bowling and aggressive batting necessitated the introduction of Gales looping off spin. It was Bovaird who struck 1st however as he took a low caught and bowled but Gale soon got into the action with Leak claiming his 1st of 3 catches behind the stumps. The bowling from the other end was rotated every 4 overs to keep the bowlers fresh and MacDonald was rewarded with his effort with 2 wickets.

Regular wickets and tight bowling from Gale slowed the run rate but it was Louis Kirby who was the best in his family today, bowling a tight line and skiddy length to frustrate the lower order into mistakes. Gale bowled with excellent control to stifle the batsmen and the bowling was supported with steady fielding although 2 easy catches were dropped towards the end of the innings.

We claimed back 11 overs so the chase to 190 for the win in 58 overs looked achievable. However, as tea was not yet ready, a 10 over spell from the home side needed to be negotiated. Some poor shot selection from Harnack, Bovaird and Foster made for uncomfortable eating at the break at 13-3. This was soon 17-5 but Levey batting with his usual obstinacy and Leak slowly rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 37 before the latter was bowled. Young MacDonald then entered the fray and proceeded to tuck into some loose bowling but Levey's vigil was finally ended when LBW for 29. At 72-8, Gale joined MacDonald in a free scoring partnership of around 50. As we counted down the overs (or calculated the run rate depending on how you look at things) hopes were high of repeating last week's escape or even pulling off an unlikely victory. But MacDonald's stumping put paid to things and with Joel Kirby being well caught and bowled with 4 overs to go, we were well beaten.

There were a number of positives, not least the performances of the younger players who embarrassed the top order with their application and positive intent at the crease (you know who you are...). Louis' bowling was a revelation, Harry's control excellent and Adam's good all round contribution were the highlights. Although we must start winning, these contributions are encouraging.
