Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI v Takeley 2nd XI on Sat 13 May 2017 at 1:30
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost by 17 runs

Match report A brilliant well crafted Century wasn't enough to help the three's claim their first victory in a run fest at the Leventhorpe tundra, frustratingly falling 15 runs short of our target of 253. With Friday evening drop outs leaving us with 10 men, and Romesh needing to leave early to save his marriage, we inserted Takeley on an absolute belter of a wicket. Romesh and Dongworth took the new ball, with Romesh bowling economically, initially making the breakthrough with the help of a great catch standing up by WK Vijay. The other opener continued in the same vein chancing his arm (or rather his bottom hand)giving two lives, before being caught by Bowler who took a fine backward running catch, who then celebrated by ignoring his team mates and taking a well earned comfort break (£1 in the fine pot accrued). Romesh bowled beautifully, unchanged with two wickets for 13 runs.
Lennon and Harrington put on a fine partnership, cashing in on a fantastic surface with a lightning outfield. With only 10 men, we really struggled to contain the run push with such a vast outfield to defend.
A promising spell from the 'ice cream' partnership of Harry and Benny, resulted in them taking two and one wicket respectively, which was a big positive.

Our reply started poorly with Paktsun and Bovaird removed early, leaving Ashman and Bowler to rebuild solidly, seeing off the opening attack. Unfortunately, skipper Bowler was run out in a mix up after 'skying' a no ball to square leg, which meant the partnership was broken, and we had to start again. Chisnall added impetus, but was unluckily bowled off his shirt for 25, and with Harnack being snaffled down the leg side (was it off his glove or his wrist?) Ashman went into overdrive, as he was fast running out of partners. With 9 men on the boundary, a luxury that we would have loved, Harry Bailes put on 50 with Ashman for the seventh wickt, and Benny was run out trying to keep Ashman on strike. Ashman brought up a brilliant century, and raised our slim hopes in the final over clobbering a huge six off the first ball of the final over, but sadly his and our innings came to an end after being well caught on the boundary to bring an excellent well spirited match to a conclusion with Takeley taking maximum points.
The lack of an extra body was desperately felt while one of the batters needed to push on and support the heroic Ashman.
There are always positives, and Romesh's bowling, Harry and Benny bowling confidently and adding well needed youth and energy in the field, and a close run chase were the takeaways of a hard fought but fairly contested match. And finally, Mrs Bowler's home made cakes weren't bad either-well done Mrs. B!
