Hitchin v Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 1.00
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Won 8 wickets

Match report Sawbridgeworth will go into the their final match at home to Harpenden 2nd XI knowing that victory will guarantee their place in Division One of the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League next season.

A dramatic day at the foot of the table saw Steve Ashman’s side produce a magnificent performance as they demolished Hitchin by eight wickets, completing their fourth league win of the season before the scheduled tea interval.

After losing the toss, they dismissed their hosts for just 91 in 29.3 overs, which was the first time they had dismissed any opposition for under 100 in a league game since they bowled out Radlett for 66 on the final day of the 2013 campaign.
Everything went right for Sawbo after Sean Black (2-28) removed Hitchin opener Luke Day via a juggling slip catch to Ashman to the fourth ball of the day. Saad Waqas and Musa Ilyas top scored with 22 but the home side crumbled as Sawbo produced their best bowling and fielding display in many years.

Paul James marked his return to the side with superb figures of 10-2-20-3. Matt Billings chipped in with 3-8 in 4.3 overs with Saad Naveed and Jack Timms taking a wicket each.

In reply, Sawbo romped home in 16.5 overs with Owen Groves (39*) and Rob Sanders (29) putting on 48 for the first wicket before Ashman (22*) hit the winning runs to move his side out of the relegation zone.

Just 15 points separate the bottom four going in to the last round of matches. Harpenden 2nd XI are on 257 points, 10 clear of Sawbridgeworth ahead of this weekend’s clash at Town Fields. Kings Langley are on 245 points after losing by five wickets in a rain affected game to basement club Knebworth Park, who closed the gap to within three on 242. The bottom two have potentially tougher tasks than Sawbo as Kings Langley travel to third placed Broxbourne while Knebworth host Ickleford, who are currently fifth. However, such has been the unpredictability of all these four sides in recent weeks, last day drama is virtually guaranteed.
