Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club 3rd XI v Three Caps on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 1.30
Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club Lost by 16 runs

Match report The 3's welcomed top of the league Three Caps 2's to Leventhorpe, who won the toss and elected to bat. At first this looked like a poor decision as Charlie got both openers out cheaply, both caught going for big shots. However their 3 and 4 then batted really well, exploiting the very (very) small boundary one side by punishing any wayward bowling. At 132 for 2 off 16 overs it looked like they were well on track to a score significantly in excess of 300, which would have been well above par.

But Romesh then started to bowl a tight line consistently, supported by Hilly at the other end, and the pressure tolled when their most destructive batsman took a big risk and was bowled round his legs. It then turned into the Ollie Bruton show, returning to cricket after a 2 year hiatus. He took 3 wickets, including their other half centurian, through bowling at the stumps at a reasonable pace. He then also enacted a great run out, hitting one stump from point to get their number 5. Their lower order continued to come out swinging but we kept taking wickets, with good bowling and fielding and ended up bowling them out with 3.1 overs remaining for what felt like a below par 243.

Our reply started solidly against some decent bowling, showing why they are top of the league. At drinks we had only lost Ted, but had reached 87 with 19 overs left. With the required rate above 8 we looked to accelerate, but the loss of 3 wickets in 2 overs took the wind out of a sails a bit leaving us 107 for 4 after 24.4 overs. Bowls and Phil kept it ticking for a few overs but then looked to accelerate again from the 29th over. But Bowls got out at the start of the 30th over with the score on 139, which brought Romesh to the crease. He immediately showed his intent by hitting his 3rd and 4th balls for 6 over the short boundary, this left us with 105 needed off the last 10 which was obviously going to be a huge ask.

Some hard hitting and good running meant we got 30 off the next 5 until Phil got out for a well constructed 21, which brought Ollie to the crease who by the way he walked out to bat clearly meant business. He and Romesh started to hit it hard and really pushed the fielders, but it was always just too many runs to get. The main question in the final over was would Romesh get 6 off the last 2 balls to complete his maiden 50, but unfortunately he could only manage 1 to finish undefeated on 45. Still a great effort as they put on 58 off the last 5, but we still finished 16 runs short and wondering what might have been if we had maybe bowled/fielded a bit better or not lost key wickets in the middle overs.
